Homeopathic Treatment in Patients with COVID-19: Analysis of Clinical Evolution and Comparison between Cases in 2020 and 2021.

BACKGROUND: The manifestations of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can result in several prognoses and lead patients to look for appropriate complementary or alternative treatment options according to their personal situation and available health care. Patients with mild symptoms or those who have not yet reached the maximum severity of their condition are those who seek outpatient care, where homeopathic treatment might be considered, given the well documented history of this medical system in several epidemics in the past. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the homeopathic treatment used for symptomatic cases of COVID-19 in March and April 2020 with cases treated in March and April 2021. METHOD: This is a retrospective observational study based on the analysis of the medical records of symptomatic COVID-19 patients treated on an outpatient basis with homeopathy at the Hahnemanniano George Galvão Institute in São Paulo, Brazil. We analyzed 54 cases, divided into two samples (27 cases in each year), similar in relation to age, gender and origin of the patients. RESULTS: The development was distinct in the 2 years, with improvement of symptoms after 3 days of the first homeopathic prescription in 2020 whilst in 2021 the improvement occurred from the sixth day onward. The most frequently prescribed homeopathic medicine also differed in the two samples (Antimonium tartaricum in 2020; Arsenicum album in 2021), which indicates the different disease characteristics at these two moments of the epidemic. CONCLUSION: In 2020, the symptomatology of the cases was mainly acute and the main medicine was Antimonium tartaricum. By comparison, in 2021 a greater interference from individuals' previous chronic miasmatic disease may explain the change in the main medicines used that year, with Arsenicum album being the most prescribed in the cases studied.

Princípios de Hahnemann no tratamento de um quadro agudo: relato de caso / Hahnemann's principles in the treatment of a acute frame: case report

A Homeopatia é uma ciência fundamentada na observação dos fenômenos naturais. Segundo Hahnemann, a cura homeopática é aquela que acontece de acordo com as leis naturais, sendo uma delas a lei dos semelhantes, já descrita por muitos médicos desde a antiguidade, inclusive Hipócrates. Quando são seguidos os princípios estipulados por Hahnemann, considerando a totalidade sintomática, incluindo a escolha do medicamento, sua potência, dose e frequência de administração, o tratamento homeopático torna-se eficaz tanto em casos crônicos quanto nos agudos, "sendo capaz de aniquilar a doença sem produzir novos e sérios distúrbios". Este estudo tem como objetivo exemplificar como, seguindo os princípios estipulados, a Homeopatia pode ser eficaz no tratamento de um quadro agudo que não obteve sucesso com a terapêutica alopática convencional. Trata-se de um relato de caso de paciente de 64 anos, sem doença prévia instalada, com ferimento corto- -contuso em mão esquerda após queda da própria altura, mantendo sinais flogísticos e ausência de cicatrização 13 dias após a realização da sutura e de fazer uso regular de antibiótico e anti-inflamatório prescritos. Após a avaliação da totalidade sintomática, foi prescrito Belladonna 6cH, administrada pelo método plus, resultando em alívio imediato dos sintomas e cura total em 5 dias. Realizando com cautela o diagnóstico homeopático e a partir disso elegendo o medicamento mais similar ao caso, com potência, dose e frequência de administração adequadas, é possível obter resultados eficazes com o tratamento homeopático, sempre considerando a constituição do indivíduo.

Homeopathy is a science based on the observation of phenomena natural. According to Hahnemann, homeopathic cure is one that happens according to natural laws, one of which is the law of similars, already described by many doctors since ancient times, including Hippocrates. When the principles stipulated by Hahnemann, considering the symptomatic totality, including the choice of the medicine, its potency, dose and frequency of administration, the Homeopathic treatment becomes effective in both chronic and in acute cases, "being capable of annihilating the disease without producing new and serious disturbances." This study aims to exemplify how, following the stipulated principles, Homeopathy can be effective in treatment of an acute condition that has not been successful with therapy conventional allopathic. This is a patient case report 64 years old, with no previous illness, with a cut wound-bruise in the left hand after falling from a height, maintaining phlogistic signs and lack of healing 13 days after the procedure suture and regular use of prescribed antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. After evaluating the totality of symptoms, Belladonna was prescribed 6cH, administered by the plus method, resulting in immediate relief of symptoms and complete cure in 5 days. Carrying out the diagnosis with caution homeopathic and from there choosing the medicine most similar to the case, with adequate potency, dose and frequency of administration, it is possible to obtain effective results with homeopathic treatment, always considering the constitution of the individual.

Leishmaniose Tegumentar Americana: relato de caso de sucesso com tratamento exclusivamente homeopático / American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: case report of successful exclusive homeopathic treatment

A Leishmaniose Tegumentar Americana (LTA) é uma doença infecciosa, que evolui com destruição tecidual. O tratamento convencional é associado a efeitos adversos graves que podem resultar em abandono da terapia. Objetivo: Mostrar a homeopatia como uma opção terapêutica para o tratamento da LTA sem submeter o paciente aos efeitos deletérios do tratamento convencional. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo de um caso de leishmaniose tegumentar americana atendido em um consultório particular. O paciente havia sido tratado com homeopatia clássica por um longo tempo. A intervenção foi feita por um medicamento individualizado a cada consulta. Vários medicamentos homeopáticos foram administrados, sendo um de cada vez. Resultados: Todas as manifestações da doença, incluindo a úlcera, foram curadas em 5 meses, sem efeitos colaterais e sem sinais de recaída após 12 anos de seguimento. Conclusão: O tratamento homeopático individualizado isoladamente foi eficaz para curar um caso de LTA em apenas alguns meses e seus efeitos permaneceram após 15 anos de seguimento. Ensaios clínicos controlados randomizados são necessários para demonstrar a eficácia do tratamento homeopático.

American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) is a tissue destructing, potentially disfiguring vector-borne disease. Conventional treatment is associated with severe adverse effects which might result in dropout. Methods: Case report of an ACL patient presenting with a severe leg ulcer. The patient was followed up at a conventional specialized service but received individualized homeopathic treatment alone. Results: All manifestations of disease including the ulcer were healed in 5 months with no side effects and no signs of relapse after 13-year follow up. Conclusion: Individualized homeopathic treatment alone was effective to heal a case of ACL in just few months, the effects lasting after 15-year follow up. Randomized controlled trials are necessary to demonstrate the efficacy of the homeopathic treatment for ACL.

Antimonium Tartaricum as a Possible Homeopathic Prophylactic Remedy in the COVID-19 Epidemic.

The current COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) epidemic has proved challenging due to its high impact on physical and mental health. According to Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, in an epidemic the most severe symptoms of the clinical condition presented by the population in question should be the basis for selecting the medication that is as similar as possible to them, and which should be administered to individuals who have been exposed to the disease but have not yet developed it. This medicine is called the genus epidemicus. This study aims to demonstrate the reasoning used to propose the homeopathic medicine Antimonium tartaricum (Ant-t) as a genus epidemicus in the COVID-19 epidemic. It was decided to develop the reasoning based on the respiratory symptoms described in the epidemiological bulletins presented by the Health Surveillance Secretariat of the Ministry of Health of Brazil, as these symptoms are the most serious of the disease. After repertorization, it was confirmed in the Materia Medica that Ant-t has a high degree of similarity with these respiratory symptoms, including the most serious situations, of COVID-19. Homeopathic Ant-t is thus a possible prophylactic genus epidemicus in the COVID-19 epidemic; further studies are needed to test this conclusion.

A Homeopathic View of the Influence of Chronic Diseases in the Manifestation of COVID-19.

COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) may present variable symptoms among infected individuals, with chronic disease patients appearing as the group most susceptible to present severe pulmonary infection, while having a higher risk of developing complications from the disease. This study demonstrates the relationship between the manifestation of COVID-19 and the presence of chronic miasmatic disease, based on the works of Samuel Hahnemann. The reaction of the individual who previously presented chronic miasmatic disease, when in contact with the stimulus of the epidemic disease, depends on the type of response that the organism was generating in the face of the pre-existing situation: if it is an intense reaction and greater than that which the stimulus of COVID-19 can generate, this individual will not develop the severe form of the epidemic disease; if the reaction is less than that generated by COVID-19, more intense symptoms may appear. Understanding that the presence of a chronic miasmatic disease interferes with the manifestation of COVID-19, which may have repercussions on other organs, can change how one must act on the treatment, as this can alter the individual's health status.

Relato do caso: Sra. M., 57 anos, há 3 dias apresentando dores agudas na uretra, em queimação, ao urinar, e coceira após; dores no baixo ventre, em topografia de bexiga, antes e durante a micção; desejo muito aumentado de urinar, mas a cada ida ao banheiro, apenas um pouco de urina era expelida; indisposição geral; bastante irritada,nervosa, ralhando severamente com os familiares, especialmente logo após a micção; hipersensível mesmo a pequenos estímulos, como luz, ruídos, conversa das pessoas; normalmente calorenta, mas agora abrigando-se do frio até de modo excessivo – masnão apresentava febre. Apetite diminuído, mas com sede. Sem outras queixas. Ao exame físico, dor à palpação abdominal em região suprapúbica. Abdome inocente.

Os autores em colaboracao com todos os demais membros atuais do Grupo de Estudos puderam conhecer de perto, nestes ultimos anos, a pessoa, a familia e o trabalho de WALTER EDGARD MAFFEI. De forma ainda mais estreita e prolongada, um dos autores, Galvao Nogueira, estuda e acompanha o pensamento de Maffei desde 1963 quando seu na Faculdade de Medicina de Sorocaba, e de forma ainda mais direta, quando passou a frequentar regularmente as autopsias na Santa Casa de Misericordia de Sao Paulo e a sua residencia, desde 1976. Justifica-se este trabalho em um Congresso de Homeopatia, o primeiro ocorrido apos sua morte, pelo pensamento medico do Mestre, que sem duvida fornece substrato em linguagem medico-cientifica atual ao pensamento de Hahnemann, alem do que, Maffei nos ultimos vinte anos de sua carreira, foi um apologista da Homeopatia
